For the first time in Bundesliga history, the bottom three sides head into the final day of the season on the same points.
Come Saturday teatime, one will be in the relegation play-offs but the other two will be consigned to the second tier of German football.
Wolfsburg go into the weekend in the play-off position - three goals better off than Heidenheim and St Pauli, who are only separated by goals scored.
The drama is further intensified by the fact St Pauli host Wolfsburg on the final day - and you can watch that match live on BBC Sport and iPlayer at 14:30 BST (UK only).

Wolfsburg have only won one of their last 16 Bundesliga matches.
Former champions Wolfsburg are set for their worst finish in the Bundesliga since the 2017-18 season, when they were 16th and stayed up after beating Holstein Kiel 4-1 on aggregate in the relegation play-off.
The Wolves have been in the Bundesliga since the 1997-98 season, winning the title in 2009, the DFB-Pokal in 2015 and the Franz Beckenbauer Supercup in 2015-16.
Wolfsburg's goal difference gives them some breathing room, meaning a win over St Pauli is likely to result in them being in the play-off.
However, they have struggled for form in 2026, having only won one of their past 16 league matches.
That said, they have taken more points on the road this season, with four of their six wins away from home, and they are unbeaten in their past five meetings with St Pauli.

Heidenheim have hit good form at the right time, only losing one of their past seven Bundesliga matches
Heidenheim are 17th in the league as they prepare to host Mainz on Saturday.
In mid-March, following a defeat by Eintracht Frankfurt, they were 10 points adrift from the play-off position and looked certain to be playing in the second tier of German football after three seasons in the Bundesliga.
Heidenheim have since lost only one of their seven league matches, which include wins against Union Berlin, Cologne and, most importantly, St Pauli.
If St Pauli and Wolfsburg draw, a win would take Heidenheim into the relegation play-off. Otherwise, they will need to win and finish with a better goal difference than whoever comes out on top.

St. Pauli have only won one of their past 10 Bundesliga matches
St Pauli go into the last game of the season on the back of some poor results and sitting bottom of the Bundesliga.
The Hamburg side have only won one of their past 10 league matches - a 1-0 victory at Hoffenheim.
Their biggest issue this season has been a lack of attacking threat - they have the fewest shots of any team in the league and have averaged less than a goal a game (28 in 33 matches).
St Pauli do have the benefit of playing in front of their home fans, where they have picked up 17 of their 26 points.
Anything less than a win on Saturday, though, will see them drop to Bundesliga 2.
Wolfsburg are in the driving seat with a better goal difference than their relegation rivals. A win would all but secure the play-off position, unless Heidenheim win by four goals more than them.
A draw against St Pauli and Wolfsburg would still make the relegation play-off position as long as Heidenheim draw or lose to Mainz.
Heidenheim need to better the result of either St Pauli or Wolfsburg, with goal difference needed if Wolfsburg win.
A draw between St Pauli and Wolfsburg would mean Heidenheim just need to win to make the play-offs.
As for St Pauli, only a win will see them reach the relegation play-off position, and they must better the goal difference of Heidenheim if they also win.
